Complex Trauma
Have you experienced multiple traumatic events?
Trauma comes in many forms. Have you heard the term big T vs. little T trauma?
Little T trauma refers to events that typically don't involve violence or disaster, and do create significant distress. Big T trauma is chronic ongoing trauma such as repeated abuse or acute psychological trauma such as a death of a parent.
Many of our therapists are trained in EMDR. This is a form of therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. This form of structured therapy helps the client focus on recalling stressful past events via rapid eye movements. Through this process the memory networks begin to reprocess and desensitize to the memory in a way that reduces it to a memory without the acute physical sensations and acute triggers.
Unlike other treatments that focus on directly altering the emotions, thoughts, and responses resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR focuses directly on the memory. This is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms.
